Line - is a path traced by a moving point

Actual Line - Line that really exists

Implied Line - Line that is created by our eyes but that isn't really there. Example: dotted line

Psychic line is not a line which is seen, but one which is felt as a mental connection that exists between two elements. Example: the line our eyes create when we follow the direction someone is looking

Contour - boundaries that the viewer perceives when looking at the three-dimensional form

Outline - a line that marks the outer limits of an object or figure

Contour Line - The line we draw to record the boundaries of the object or form we see (It is a drawing)

Expressive Line - are lines that send us messages about what the artist wants his or her work to make us feel. Curved, jagged, wide, narrow, and bold would all describe expressive line

Shape - is two-dimensional form that occupies an area with identifiable boundaries

Form - is the shapes visual appearance, or configuration of an three-dimensional object (forms have dimension and take up space (mass and volume)

Implied Form - It is a drawing of a three-dimensional form

Mass - is three-dimensional form that occupies a volume. (how much visual space an object takes up)

Volume - is how much three-dimensional space an object contains within its boundaries

Geometric shape - can be defined by a set of points or vertices and lines connecting the points in a closed chain, as well as the resulting interior points. Examples might include - circles, squares, and triangles

Organic shapes - are shapes found in nature. Like the outline of a tree branch

Figure - the shape we detach and focus on in an image

Ground - is the shape we perceive abound the figure

Positive shapes - The space we perceive as figure

Negative shapes - The space we reprieve as ground

Grey scale: scale used to explore the relative lightness or darkness

Modeling: the use of grey scale to represent the light falling across a surface creating a three-dimensional effect in drawing.

High lights: directly reflected light on the surface of an object

Shadows: darker areas of an object where light doesn't hit as strongly. Shadows are relative

Hatching: an area of closely spaced horizontal lines used to show lightness and darkness

Cross hatching: an area of closely spaced overlapping lines used to show lightness and darkness

Stippling: the use of dots to create lightness and darkness

Value Contrast: the degree of difference between shades of gray

Chiaroscuro: dramatic shifts from light to dark

Spectrum: how light breaks into band of color as it moves through a prism

Additive color: color based on light, RGB (red, green, and blue light) come together create color

Subtractive color: color based on pigment. CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) are used to create color for print

Primary colors: Red, Yellow, Blue

Secondary color: equal parts of 2 primary color mixed together (orange, green, and purple).

Tertiary color: color created by mixing a primary with a secondary (yellow-green)

Analogous color: colors that are beside each other on the color wheel (yellow and yellow-green)

Complementary colors: colors that are on the opposite sides of the color wheel (green and red)

Local color: the color of an object close to you and in good light

Perceptual color: Color that is altered by atmosphere

Hue: is any color that exist on the color wheel in its pure form

Tint: Hue plus white

Shade: Hue plus black

Value: is the relative lightness or darkness of a color

Intensity or saturation: is the relative brightness or dullness of a color. Intensity can be lowered by adding grey or the complementary color

Palette: is the range of colors an artist chooses to use on a particular painting

Color schemes: select set of colors artist choose to use in their work

Monochromatic color scheme: Hue plus black and white

Polychromatic color scheme: Many colors are used plus black and white
